Upper Dauphin Area Elementary School

A Word from the Principal

I am very excited to serve the Upper Dauphin Area School District family as the Elementary School Principal! I look forward to working with all of you to help your children continue to grow academically, socially and emotionally. I am confident that if we work as a team, we will make your children's academic experience enjoyable and productive.

I hope to have the opportunity to meet all of you in person in the near future so I may better engage with the very people that have been, and continue to be, the students' first and most influential teachers.

So, this is an open invitation to meet me! Please feel free to stop by the office and/or call anytime!

And, thank you so very much for sending us such great children!

Sincerely,
Jessica S. Megonnell
Upper Dauphin Area Elementary Principal

The wonderful weather this week allowed for some unique learning opportunities that are usually not possible in the winter.  One example of this was our second grade classrooms getting outside to do some observations for their current Science module.  It was great to see the kids and teachers outside taking part in hands-on activities that were fun and educational.

One of the wonderful things about this week was my observation of incidental learning that is taking place at UDAES.  One example of this is when I walked by a classroom and saw students reading a poem on the door while waiting in line to go to recess.  It is so great to see kids seeking out opportunities to read and the teachers providing these opportunities to them.  Another example of this was students practicing their spelling words on their way back from lunch.  The great part about this was that they weren’t disrupting anything so the teacher stayed close to

Kindergarten DIBELS scores are in and they are very exciting.  We had one classroom that has all of their students at Benchmark!!  The students made great gains in their FSF (First Sound Fluency) and LNF (Letter Naming Fluency) in all of the classes.  The students were also given the tests of PSF (Phoneme Segmentation Fluency) and NWF (Nonsense Word Fluency) for the first time and they did a great job on those assessments also.  The students that have been identified at risk and have been in the Extended Day Kindergarten program have definitely benefitted from that added

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday and had the opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family.  I enjoyed time with my family, but I am happy to be back.

It is great to have the kids back at school!  They all seem to be happy to be back and learning again!  The classrooms are back in the swing of things and moving forward full speed with their curriculum.  I can tell already that 2012 will be a great year!

The elementary school has been filled with the spirit of the holidays this week.  It has been wonderful to see the students taking part in holiday projects and assignments.  Many of these projects are displayed in the hallway for all to enjoy.

Many of our RtII groups finished 2011 with some holiday presentations.  There were jokes, poems and readers’ theaters to share with the audience.  It was great to see the progress that the students have made since the beginning of the year and to see them enjoy reading!

We started this week with data meetings to reorganize our RtII groups so we are ready to jump in with both feet after the holiday break.  The data was encouraging and resulted in the reduction of intensive RtII groups in most grade levels.  For example, Fourth grade went from having four intensive groups to having one group that is working on basic reading skills.  The DIBELS is just one of the data points we use, but below is a table to show a snapshot of the data (note: kindergarten will benchmark in January).
